Re: Do we expect too much from the current generation of goalkeepers?
Football has changed so much, back in the day someone who was 6 foot 4 would be a giant whereas today that would be average for a keeper.

I feel very few keepers from years ago would be as effective in the modern game with the rule changes and media coverage whereas I am sure most of today's keepers would find the olden days a doddle in comparison to play in.

Having said that Phil Parkes has been my favourite keeper of all time.

Re: Do we expect too much from the current generation of goalkeepers?
Good topic. It's so hard to compare between generations, in terms of physical fitness it's just a different level now I think. Easy to say the old generation wouldn't survive nowadays, but the reality is they'd just develop themselves differently, be more disciplined, in better physical peak etc.

I think we can see with our two keepers the way it's getting squeezed again. The idea of the veteran keeper that provides solidity seems to be in direct threat, especially at our end of the table where you need more from athletic shot-stoppers, I think it skews towards younger keepers. I think the shape of a keeper's career is just very different now - you don't get careers like those earlier-era players anymore.

Re: Do we expect too much from the current generation of goalkeepers?
I was reflecting on this the other day, sort of.

I remember when Robert Green was playing for us, he regularly used to pull off saves that really should have been goals for the opposition, and he saved quite a few penalties too. I don't really remember anything like that from Adrian or Hart.

But then green never really came up with the goods for England, and in fact there were famously 5 goalies ahead of him. Now we have England's supposed number 1 and he can't get a game for club or country.

Not sure what conclusions to draw from that. Probably that we expect the current generation to be good at least but they're just shit.

You could argue keepers are better than they've ever been, but generally, so are outfield players. Not only that, but the role of a Goalkeeper has changed drastically that they're more involved than ever

Re: Do we expect too much from the current generation of goalkeepers?
Some of the keepers of the present era ... DeGea, Courtois etc are as good as the old ones and the balls now do move around more than in the olden days.

BUT .... the era of Shilton, Parkes & Clemence was a golden period for English keepers and that's what is lacking now.
Keeping was probably the last area to be overtaken by foreign players and probably for the first time in living memory there is no recognised England no1.
Its certainly not Joe Hart who looks finished.

Re: Do we expect too much from the current generation of goalkeepers?
Instinctively I would have said the standard of English goalkeeping is currently in a bit of a rut but the general standard of goalkeeping has always been variable. I always thought Neville Southall was the best keeer in the eighties, Shilton was pretty good and Parkes not far behind. Also don’t recall Parkes making many errors. I never rated Gary Bailey. Grobbelarr was capable of some amazing saves but took risks, especially when coming for crosses and was prone to dropping the odd clanger.

Can't remember Banks making too many errors, to score against him, it had to be a great strike?

Re: Do we expect too much from the current generation of goalkeepers?
Today's keepers hardly ever catch the ball, or come off their goal line when the ball is in the air.

Re: Do we expect too much from the current generation of goalkeepers?
Mistakes, and slight errors, are much more magnified now and all goals are dissected to the nth degree. Rather than enjoy a goal being scored it has to be analysed to death and someone blamed. They have to fill the hours on TVs and radio somehow. Call it Adrian Durham syndrome.

Nice intelligent answer Miike well done!

This is about goalkeepers in general from the different era's not just West Ham.

It's easier to forgive a player's mistakes when their wage isn't evidence of a world gone mad.

Re: Do we expect too much from the current generation of goalkeepers?
you're right, Joe Hart has been treated unfairly and Parkes was crap
